Sad news....

....my local secret charity shop has been given a price list - grrrr!  I was in there having a quick look and I overheard the two helpers (who have also moved the whole shop around) that they have to re price the items as they are too cheap and they need to look at the price list - blugh!  I couldn't keep quiet so I said "that's a shame as its nice to go to a charity shop where the stock leaves the shelves and the pricing is good", they said that the manager advised the price change but they are going to amend the prices when they are in on their own anyway as they want to get rid of the stock - phew!  I'll be on price watch now lol.

But on a happier note I'm going to show my charity shop purchases this the week:

Vintage Irish linen embroidered tray cloth still in his original box - £1 :o)

Hand embroidered table cloth and 6 napkins - £1.50.

Glass dressing table tray that matches the trinket jar i bought at the boot sale on Sunday £1.50 :o)

Another embroidered table cloth but this one has pink hearts - can I get a combined awww... £2 for this beauty.

Sooty with wand for my little boy.  The funny thing was I was buying some books at the time I spotted this and said to the lady on the till "Hang on I've just spotted Sooty" - well I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the lady on the till hot foot it down to the toy shelf shouting "Sooty really??" and then she lunged for it.  I and the queue line were a bit taken aback at the blatant poaching of an item but the shop staff.  She then said that he was too big for her collection so I could have him - bloody cheek! lol.  So I bought for £1.99 just to rescue him from the feelings of rejection twice over (plus my little boy has taken a shine to him).

Very excited to find two 1940s Simplicity sewing patterns for 50p each!!  And remember ladies....Simplicity is smartness...and to be truly glamorous you must be smart *wink*

My Final bargain buy wasn't from a charity shop but from TK MAXX - it was in the clearance pile:

A Ladybird book print pencil case or make-up bag according to the label :o)  How fabulous is this, love it and it was reduced from £9.95 to £1.50.  The attached label is very cute too, love this little bit about being a product of the ladybird generation:

I'm going to keep this little tag as it makes me smile so will find something crafty to do with it hopefully.

I've also found out today that there is another one of those church table top sales on saturday so I'm looking forward to some more 20p bargains!! eeeeee!

  1. Scarlett, Scarlett, Scarlett! The exact same thing happened to my local "indepedent" charity shop. They got a new manager in and the prices have rocketed (they really have) so much so that Oxfam, which was the most expensive charity shop in our area, is now the cheapest!!

Anyway, love your buys especially the patterns and the ladybird pencil case thingy. The tag is brilliant and very telling!

  2. WoW...what lovely finds. I was in our local Good Will yesterday and over heard a shopper on the phone descriping an item that i guess she thought someone would be interested in and was complaining that the prices were not good in that store. I have been thinking the same thing kinda sorta when I see some of the item that are bought from other bloggers in their areas and such good prices! Hope your prices stay low!

  3. The shop I work in has to conform to prices BUT my favourite shop I visit almost daily the prices are decided by whoever is on the till - have had some great bargains in there, I usually overpay as they are too cheap sometimes.

Some great finds yet again - I've a thing for vintage linen at the moment and am buying tray cloths when I find them - even damaged as I've some makes in mind for those.

  6. You'll have to figure out what days the manager isn't in the shop!!! There's nothing worse than going into a charity shop and seeing the same stuff still on the shelves weeks later. There's a charity shop near uni which was trying to sell 2 Royal Doulton pink cups and saucers for £60 and I noticed the other day they were reduced to £30. Reckon they'll still be there next time I go.

Rant over! Love the pink glass tray (notice it's on your lovely new chair too!)

  9. Oh Nooo! Which of your followers is a worker in the secret charity shop and has decided they can make a fortune out of you?! (is it me? heheheh)

It's so annoying if you've got used to things being at jumble sale prices but I always just figure you have to compare the price to what it would cost on the high street and remember you've still got a bargain really.

You do seem to encounter a lot of shoppers with real brass neck - what a cheek to try and poach Sooty from you! (How big is he to be 'too big for her collection'? Did you have to turf Finley out of his buggy?)

Good finds, but I love the sewing patterns best, I'm on the look out for some really nice ones to frame. xx

I absolutely love stuffed toys though i'm not familiar about sooty, but he's adorable! i'm shocked to hear that lady on the till said to you!! bloody cheeky indeed! loving the 1940s sewing patterns! and what you found on TK MAXX is a jackpot! from 9.95 to 1.50?? GOSH im going there tomorrow! hehehe you should keep the funny tag coz it's hillarious! Im glad the charity shop will still keep their prices to clear the goods, coz i know my charity shop near my house has already put big prices and heard that they're going to renovate the shop and upscale it, cant even imagine what they will put the prices after they renovate it, urghh! my feet are going to walk longer and farther to another charity shops once they do that!

  15. *sighs* Such is the case with pretty much all the thrift shops in my area Scarlett. I think they're all smoking crack because some of the prices are higher than a retail store. I just cross my fingers and hope someone errs in the opposinte direction kwim?
That's darn rude for that lady to come over and try to swipe your item right out from beneath you! Oh Nooooo she din't! Lol!
There you go again with the British-isms...I have no idea what a Sooty is...I'll go google it after I'm done here. *winks*

  17. I love Simplicity pattern #2804 that style is still totally wearable today even if you're not into vintage.
I love the Ladybird tag especially the bit about children's names...very funny.
There is one op-shop here I NEVER go into... even the rubbishy stuff is way overpriced and you can't get a t towel no matter how shabby for under ten dollars! x

  24. Hi Scarlett! Thanks for visiting. I'm loving those patterns, the illustrations are wonderful.
My local charity shops are still fairly cheap but there again I live in a town with one of the highest levels of unemployment in the country.
Looking forward to catching up with you and your blog when I'm back from my travels. Much love, Vix xxx
