But its a collectors item...

Saturday and not one but TWO boot sales advertised locally - yee ha!  But don't get too excited my lovelies I drove to the first one and there was a huge turn out of 2 cars, yes really just 2 cars.  I didn't even bother getting out of my car, unloading the baby buggy and my son for two tables of goods. I could see from my dashboard that one stall was full of army surplus and batteries - not for me thanks.

So onto booty number 2 and result I could see at least three lines of sellers so I was hoping for some goodies.  I did come away with a few kitschtastic and mucho tacky items - right up my street. So here's today's finds:

50's Big eyed Bambi with the extra touch of "You'll always be my dear", love the Bambi but the added cheese factor just rockets this one for me lol.  I couldn't argue with 20p either!

1950s Kitty probably with extra 1950s fleas judging by the scratching motion - 20p!

1970s childrens book 'The Elephant with the Curly Tail' which was produced by Flamingo Books! hey hey! Another 20p well spent.

Little vintage poodle ornament, he only stands 2 inches tall, bought from a lovely little lady who was running a plant stall. She had this little one nestled between the geraniums and the tomato plants.  Took him home for 10p :o)

Now are you ready for the star of today's show, do not adjust your computer screen this really is a real item of clothing, tacky but oh soooooo fabulous.....

Mwhahaha!  Check out this vintage Elvis print track top!!  Seriously I couldn't walk past and leave this:

Not content with one Elvis they decided to put 10 on the front, but that's not all, oh no...
BAM!  Two on the back too! hahaha!  I will not be wearing this (oh ok might give it an outing to the Elvis 2012 wembley concert for a laugh and to excite a few of the older Elvis ladies) but come on how could I resist!  It was displayed pride of place on the sellers car door so thought it might be a pricey item but I was in luck...£2! That's 20p an Elvis on the front alone! *wink*

Boot Sale annoyance of the week

My number one pet peeve of the boot sale world is the seller saying "oh its a collectors item" (with the underlying phrase of "you wont be able to afford it") when asked how much for an item. After this they usually wait for me to say something, normally "yes I can see that but how much is it", seller "well its a collectors item and these sell for a lot on eBay", to which I reply "ok BUT HOW MUCH IS IT?" the seller will then begrudgingly explain a bit more about the item before telling me the price at which point I know this will be way over the top, they will probably not sell it at the boot sale, and I'm annoyed enough not to want to buy it.

Today this happened with some tatty ladybird puddle lane books, exactly the same spiel telling me that ladybird books were very collectable (no s**t Sherlock), finally she got round to telling me she wanted £4 per book!!  She concluded that "sell for £5 plus each on eBay"...err ok sweetheart.   Has this happened to you?  I find this irk happens at least once every bootsale!  I must give off a cheapskate aura *wink*. Next time I may just buy the item with a £50 note hehe!

I've got the next installment of witnessed at a boot sale for you all too but I'll save them for my next post.

Have a fabulous weekend all.

Scarlett x

  1. Love the Elvis jacket!! What a fun find. Of course I do love the cat and the little Bambi figure! Oh and 'it's a collectors item' is a definite way of saying its going to cost you...

  2. I hate the phrase 'its a collectors item' - usually means its overprices and not actually collectable.

What is it with Ladybird books - yes the matt ones are collectable but not the new ones with shiny covers and probably not Puddle Lane either.

Hoping for some cute kitsch bits tomorrow when I get my bootsale fix :)

  3. That is THE best jacket I have seen. You have to wear it next time you go to a boot sale and if anybody gives you the 'collectors item' spiel you can reply "DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I PAID FOR THIS JACKET?"

  4. Ah I love you Scarlett you make me laugh! I know what you mean about the Collectors' Item rubbish - booo! My uncle had that sort of thing this week when trying to buy a used car, the salesman got so annoyed with him wanting to test drive them and look under the bonnet (cheek of it eh?) that he sent him away saying "What do you expect for £1000?" - well, a car that actually GOES for one thing!

  5. Love the jacket. How funny.

I sell on eBay and etsy (well I try to anyway...LOL) and understand that people want to most they might can get...but really? If it sells for so much online, then for goodness sakes, sell it online. A lot of people get confused (I know I did) about this, however. They see someone listed something for 50 dollars on eBay and to them, that is what it is worth. They do not check the completed auctions and see that the only ones that are selling are not going for 50 but for 5.99, etc. I hope this makes sense. I thought my vintage patterns were going to make me rich, I have yet to sell any. LOL.

  6. Yeah if they think they can get so much more on eBay what the heck are they doing at a boot sale? Boggles the mind. It gets harder and harder to bag a bargain, eh!

Liking that fleabag kitty very much. Great nostalgic kitsch.

  10. oh i love that cute big eyed bambi and scratching kitty hahaha i wont worry abt the fleas, already handpainted i presume hehehe. aww the curly tails of the elephants are adorable and i trust you to find treasure even between the plants, cute poodle for 10p!! woot you found elvis track top!! what a bargain with those 10 elvis on the front and 2 at the back for just £2! i dont think i'd bother to ask if they're annoying like that in selling things, the point of them being there is to sell, isnt it? not scaring people off or play a snob (thinks they're already rich enough or if it's a collector's item, why dont they set up a more fancy shop rather than selling it in car boot sale?), i'd be annoyed too!! so just walk on by, scarlett!! x Susan

  13. Bwahahahaha - sorry, I mean, cool beans, Scarlett, that jacket is super neato!
Do have a soft spot for itchy kitchy kitty and the poodle (I have tried to make my daughter collect poodles for ever, haven't tried the collector's item line but we do call them poodle-o-billia) Thanks for the laugh.

  16. What gorgeous finds! I couldn't agree more about the seller snobbery ~ I hear the same all the time over here, but it's usually "it's worth such and such at an antique store" ~ but I'm not shopping at an antique store, I'm shopping at a garage sale! They usually never end up selling their over-priced item anyway, then lose out as they end up donating it to a charity shop, and getting nothing for it! I've often thought that someone should write a "how-to" manual for second-hand sellers!

  17. No wonder you couldn't leave Elvis behind - he'll keep you warm at night!! I love thoe little figures, so cute, especially the poodle.

  18. Oh Scarlett, you do make me smile. I know exactly what you mean about "it's a collectors item". I actually had that happen in our local charity shop last week over a piece of Poole pottery. And I agree with Wendz, why are they selling it at a boot sale if they know they can get more on ebay? Love the poodle, he's really cute. Lesley x

  19. That Elvis trakkie top is hilarious, Scarlett! I love that poddle, he'd be right at home on my poodle parlour-inspired shelf.
The term "collector's item" means nothing. Most people collect something but it doesn't necessarily mean that it's particularly valuable or rare. I mean, I collect framed prints of miserable kids but they're never going to be worth more than a quid.
If people expect to get more money they should sell them online or at an auction. Car Boot sales are all about bargains. xxx

  21. Huh seems like if they're going on about it selling for £x on ebay I'd be like 'well why aren't you selling it on ebay?!' Loving the Elvis trackie, original! :)

  22. I would've fought you for that poodle if we were at the same boot sale!!!

  23. "that would go for xx on Ebay". Oh God, yes. Every week, at least once. I am always very tempted to reply, "so why don't you sell it on Ebay rather than trying to flog it at some overpriced amount in a bloody field, love?"

  24. That's annoying about caginess on price. I mean, it's a car boot sale, not an international web market!! LOVING the vintage china ornaments, we have a china cat and kittens just like that at home. xx

  25. That Elvis jacket totally rocks.....and...rolls! love all the tacky..er...kitchy cuties! And you don't want to ge me started on the whole yard sellers saying "Well on Ebay, this is selling for...." thing! I wrote a huge rant on my blog last summer about this whole thing! My respose is, "You should be selling it on Ebay instead of out of your garage".

  26. that little kitten statue is so cute! man, those types of people are so annoying. half the time the crap they are trying to sell isn't even a collectors' item; they just want to sound like they know what they are talking about. =p
