A 'Who done it' Story

Ok so I was supposed to do a post with all my weeks finds but something else came up....

I was having a good old rummage in the scarf box at the charity shop yesterday and a little bit of blue caught my eye:

I pulled it out and had a closer look at the horse racing design:

Then I spied this:

Oooh now that's what I like to see printed on a scarf!  I checked the price tag - 99p :o))  So I took it to the till and made my getaway.

So the question my lovelies is this a real one or a fake?

I've been searching the Internet and cant find this design anywhere.  I would assume that the fakes are more likely to be the popular designs.  I've checked the edging and it is rolled and hand stitched on the front of the design which according to Hermes collectors sites is a sign of a genuine scarf.  I feels like it has some age to it also.  I've looked for the copyright symbol but I cant find it but then again according to these sites some of the 1950s scarves didn't have the copyright logo and it was introduced back a bit later.   The plot thickens...

So I'm now passing my detective deerstalker hat and pipe over to you to see if anyone can shed any light on this design, can anyone find out what it is called?  I'll send a little prize to the first person who manages to find the name of this design.

...but real or fake I still think this is a fun quirky scarf :o)

Oh and a little update on the ebay drama, paypal gave me the money back - hoorah!

  4. Wow, ace find. Afraid I have no knowledge of Hermes - never even touched one - but if it's a fake at least it's a good quality one!

There are so many equestrian themed hermes scarves, it's like searching for a needle in a haystack!

Hope this helps a little bit. xxx

  9. Also, am not sure on originality, but lovely nonetheless! I am in Louisville, home of the Kentucky Derby, and that scarf would fetch big dollars here around derby time! :)

  12. Good work Scarlett, and good work VainGlorySinner! I reckon it's real, well worth making a phone call I reckon. It's all very exciting, making me want to run out to the charity shops.

  14. I'm no expert when it comes to Hermés but as a stand alone scarf it is absolutely lovely - anything equestrian goes down a treat in my book. There are nowhere near enough horsey themed prints around! :-)

Excellent find my lovely - will be really intriguing finding out whether it is genuine or not! :-) One thing I would suggest is perhaps popping into a local vintage shop if there is a higher end one around? I took a Biba dress I found into a vintage shop in Notts and the ladies knew their stuff!

  16. Well I know nothing about that stuff but the design is rather lovely ;) Yay about ebay, I'm still being hassled about stuff I sold weeks ago, apparently none of my overseas stuff is reaching its destination, recorded delivery it is next time! :)

  17. I agree- real or fake, it is so beautiful and unique! But you're right, the fake ones usually are the most popular designs. I would venture to say it is real and a vintage and rare design! And you can always tell people it's real :)

  18. Fake or not it's a lovely thing and a great find.
Fingers crossed it's the real thing! x

  19. CHOUETTE! I'm betting on it being genuine. Even if it's not, like I always say, as long as you look like you can afford it, nobody will know the difference.

  20. Might be worth contacting them direct. They will almost definitely have a design archive.

  27. What a find! I also found a Hermes scarf in a charity shop for the grand sum of £1.99. Like you, I just liked it, and wasn't so concerned as to whether it was real, but a friend who is more of an expert in these things found a signature in the corner, Googled it, and it came up as real! IOf there's a signature, you could do the same.

  28. Good news about Paypal - and quite right too!

  30. Sorry can't help with the sleuthing - I'm sure there are collectors out there who can help you?

And hoorah for Paypal coughing up :)

  31. Not a clue but it's a gorgeous scarf, lucky you!

  32. Sure looks real to me....and I have over 50. ...but not that one. Check the prices on ebay.

  33. Oh i do love a silk scarf and I think that design is so unusual it could be real (i have no knowledge on which to base this assertion, just a hunch). I bet it would sell well on ebay to horse racing enthusiasts if you could bear to part with it!?
