In the dead of night....

They say every cloud has a silver lining and I was in doubt of this yesterday after taking my car for its MOT and it failing for the first time ever. I now have been relieved of my car until its fixed, walking ahoy!

So on my walk back yesterday I noticed that someone had fly tipped some wood at the end of the close.  Normally things are not left out on the road side here for fear of being fined by the council so was quite curious to see what was there.  Trying to be subtle i edged over to the stash and had a sneaky peak.  I  saw this:

Now you have to look past the manky flaking varnish, the years of dirt and the missing draw to see the beauty of this one. Its solid wood and has some real age.

With it being day light at this point and some of my neighbours already thinking I'm a bit of a fruit loop I didn't want to hoick it over my shoulder and carry it back so decided to bide my time.  I went home and pondered the right time to launch 'operation junk retrival' all the while worrying that some one was going to pinch it.

Darkness fell and that is when I made my move, walking quickly I got to the spot as was relived it was still there.  Table in arms I rushed back only to be spied by one of my elderly neighbours, he gave me a wink and said 'Good Evening' and left it at that...he's a good 'un.

So I am now in possession of my freebie junk table and am awaiting a dry day so I can get some serious sanding and painting action done on it. I just know its going to be a beauty!

  1. Well done, a happy ending for the neglected table. It's a shame about the missing drawer, but I just know you will do something special with it.
My ex lives on a modern housing estate, his neighbours always seem to be chucking out furniture. By now, he knows to give me a call whenever he spies a shelving unit, chair or chest of drawers on someone's drive. We must all be keeping the sandpaper company in business!

  5. Fab, all that gets left out round here is broken fridges. Mind you I'd probably have just taken it in daylight, my neighbours already think I'm odd after 'operation de-snail the garden' last year! (involved me carrying buckets of them to the waste ground at the end of the road every time it rained!)

  6. I can't wait to see the makeover. It's going to be a great piece once it's fixed up. I'm kind of jealous. I never find freebies on the side of the road! I probably would have snatched it right then, but then worried all the way home that all my neighbors think I'm a trash picking hobo.

  7. Ooh I'm looking forward to seeing what transformation the little table makes! A fab find.
Its amazing what others leave out. There are some white painted rocking chair legs leaning against a wall near here, and a head/foot in similar wood of a child's bed. If I knew what fabulous thing to do with them, I'd snap them up! xxx

  8. You and me must be twins separated at birth, Scarlett. I can't resist the lure of an abandoned piece of furniture either.
I bet you'll soon have it looking fabulous! xxx

  10. It’s a lovely shape. Who needs drawers anyway? Don’t answer that for fear of being misconstrued!

  20. Brilliant find. I like to be brazen in my footpath seizures. I've learnt before that timidity results in someone else getting there first.

    You were lucky!

  25. Oh just lovely ~ looking forward to seeing how it comes up! Our "council clean-ups" over here (where everyone puts their household furniture/items out on the verge) are the biggest and busiest treasure hunts of the year ~ thankfully, everyone gets involved now, so it's removed the "shame" factor of picking through other people's junk! Great for bower birds like us, isn't it?! Have a great weekend, Love Brenda

  30. What a lovely shape it is! Can't wait to see what you do with it. Nothing wonderful ever gets left out around here. Our council fines people for leaving stuff on the curb.
