Bookworm

I took 4 bags and a suitcase full of stuff to appease the charity shop gods yesterday so I'm now hoping that there will be some serious good CS Karma.  But while I was at the shop it would have been rude to leave empty handed so I got myself some more vintage books.

I was thrilled to find this little leather bound lovely:
And yes it was the inscription that sealed the deal:

I'm so interested in knowing what she was 'A Leader' of, as I'm sure the girl guides didn't start till later.  I also cant believe that this book is 107 years old - crazy!  I paid £2.99 for this book and worth every penny.

I also picked up this lovely in  its original postal book sleeve:
Has been attacked a bit by a rampant crayon but inside is this:

A children's treasury of great stories including Shakespeare, Alice in Wonderland and Gulliver's travels among others - what an amazing childrens book!  It also has a faint inscription from 1933:

It also has some incredible illustrations:

Flamingo!  Recognise this from Alice in Wonderland?  The quote is "Tut tut child!" said the Duchess "Everything's got a moral if you can only find it"

I got this book for £3.99, and it wasn't even a cabinet item lol.

I couldn't resist these:
£2 for the lot :o)

Its also been a while since the last 'Overheard in a Charity Shop' but today its going to be:

Witnessed at a Charity shop

While walking in with my bags of donations I saw a lady tie her border collie dog to the A-Frame advertising board outside the shop while she went in to have a look. Being the Easter holiday she didn't realise there were loads of kids about and one shot past the dog on a skate-board. The dog got seriously spooked, the next minute he was tearing down the road with the A-Frame board attached to his lead, the owner set off chasing the dog down the road, the charity shop ladies all rushed outside to have a good old look while tutting, saying she should have tied the dog to the railings. By this time the dog was doing the rounds of the Asda car park with board attached.  The owner did finally catch him but I had to chuckle thinking that this was probably the most creative way of advertising for shop donations ever!  I wonder if they will get an influx of goods now from the Asda shoppers.

Enjoy the sunshine all.

And there's more...

The table top sale and the spring fair were a bit of a disappointment at the weekend.  I bought a couple of bits at the table top sale but as the fair was for a cat protection charity it was full of pet goods and had the token 'wood work' stall selling wooden mushrooms and keyrings.  I do have two cats but was in no need to be buying them anything from here where the prices were very similar to the Pets At Home store and I don't think they would appreciate a wooden mushroom with their name engraved.  I also managed to dodge the photographer from the local paper who was asking people to pose with a guy dressed in a rather mangy cat costume - phew!

So here's what I couldn't resist buying:

Vintage silver plated dressing table mirror - a complete bargain at 50p (even I wash shocked at how cheap this one was).
1956 copy of Little Women - 10p

A creepy slightly psychedelic tales and stories book from the 1970s - 10p, also has an inscription which you know gets me everytime:

So if anyone knows Michael Hanson let him know I've got his book!

1950s jar - 10p. One day I will show you all my jars filled with my bits and bobs so you can see why I buy so many lol.
Ladybird Books - 10p each.

Sewing patterns which are going to be given to a friend - 50p.

And that was all my table top and spring fair buys :o)  I also popped into the secret charity shop this morning on my travels and was pleased to see that the pricing hasn't really changed much at all, all I could see was that some of the glass bits had gone from 50p to £1 but the ladies tops and dresses seemed to have gone down to £1?  So you can all sleep easy knowing my local CS haunt has not succumbed to the CS high street pricing pressure *wink*.

Happy Tuesday All.

Need my eyes checked...

Bought myself a couple of "home style" magazines yesterday as I love to have a nosey at other peoples homes and the styling. So imagine my surprise when I turned the first couple of pages and saw this:

A page on the top high street finds and there is only a blooming Rug Beater included!  Those regular readers will remember me buying a rug beater from the charity shop not long ago for 50p see here . The must have beater on the high street is £16 so I'm quids in and bang on trend *wink*.

And for a bit of fun...I was also looking through my vintage books I bought from the boot sale on Sunday checking out the illustrations when I came across this gem from Little Men:

I had to reread possibly the best quote ever in a vintage book:

I don't think I'll be threatening to 'duck someone till they cant see' anytime soon., might end up in a whole heap of trouble ..... ;o)

Happy Friday all - I can see the weekend peaking round the corner.

Boot Sale Part 2 :o)

As promised my lovelies I'm posting the second half of my mammoth boot sale haul.  Thanks for all your lovely comments on the last post and to answer the question where I put it all, well we have a lot of in built storage in the house :o) I'm also replacing all the modern boring kitchen stuff with my vintage finds as I love that mismatched look.  I'm trying to clear as I go along via La Bay which funds my shopping habits lol.

So lets take a look at the new additions.  Well it seems that some one is sending me a sign, first the froggy murder print, then the wind in the willows hamper and now:
Yup old school Wind in the Willows book.  Love it, has a slight bit of water damage to the top of the dust cover but the book and illustrations are perfect. Looking forward to reading this to my son.  Plus it was only 50p :o)

On the subject of old books I bought this lot:

Basically bought the books because they look "pretty" in a true shabby chic way. I'm not going to pretend I have literary prowess - just like the covers *wink*  I'm also a sentimental fool and the 'little men book' has this inside:

A February birthday girl in 1950. I also got this fabulous kids book by Mr Jungle book (and Nobel Prize winner) himself:
This little gem was published in 1948.  Amazing its still in such great condition.  All these books cost me 20p each *grin*.

The next item I bought caused a massive argument between the stall holders. I saw this vintage trinket jar (with mirrored lid) and perfume bottles (complete with stoppers -eeeee!):

I went in for the grab before anyone else spied them and asked the young guy on the stall how much for the set, he said £2. Well I tried to keep cool but inside I was squealing.  His mother then called him to the front on the van and they started having a heated discussion while pointing at the set. I had my £2 coin in my hot little hand just wanting to pay and run but was looking like I wasn't getting these for £2.  The guy then came back and said "my mother wants a lot more for them but as I've said £2 you can have them for that". Well the coin was in his hand like lightening and I was busy stuffing these into one of the pillow cases (aka swag bag) I bought.  The mother then came strutting over and I was like 'run run run' so I grabbed my bags and as I was darting off I heard the young guy say "well that will teach you for selling my stuff too cheap, now we're even"  eek! I wouldn't want to be in their house that evening sheesh!

But I don't feel so guilty now every time I look at them - hehehe (yup my ruthless side has shown its face) at at least meany momma can be safe in the knowledge they've gone to a good home.

I also got 5 jars which are now storing my buttons, I've only photographed 3:

They were 10p each :o)
Now what you've all be waiting for ....

Witnessed At A Boot Sale

I see so many crazy and amusing things at the booty that it would be rude not to share.

The boot sale I go to has its regulars (me being one of them) but the most noticed of us is a lady who rides a mobility scooter complete with African Grey Parrot. I kid you not the parrot hangs onto her keys and takes the whole boot sale in his stride.  I was behind her on a tricky narrow bit full of people and the parrot said "A bit of a Squeeze" and she didn't pat an eyelid just replied "yes it is" - me and the lady beside me were open mouthed in amazement - clever little bird!  I wonder if  knows how to haggle - who's going to say no to a parrot wanting a bit of chintz for a knock down price.

The second happening which amused me greatly was an eastern European lady looking at a box of breast pads:
Lady- "have they been opened?"
Stall holder - "no they are brand new"
Lady -  "oh I'll leave them then"

The last thing that made me chuckle was a grown man sniffing a handbag - getting a proper eyes closed lung full of sweaty plastic. I think he was using the guise that he was checking for leather but I think that bag just made his day...

Well done to those that got to the end of this post lol.  I've also seen today that I've reached that magic 100 followers, thank you all and I am in awe that you all read my blog!  I'm off to sort out a giveaway so watch this space as will announce it in a few days.
